In Short: You don't have to choose. Heel pain with otherwise-healthy arches needs two things working together: a firm posted heel that controls over-pronation at heel strike, and memory foam that cushions the impact. Aetrex Premium Memory Foam Posted Orthotics ($79.95) combine both — a firm posted heel plus 43% more memory foam in the forefoot than other Aetrex orthotics — so you get structure and cushioning in one insole.

Memory foam or firm support — the wrong question

People frame this as memory foam or firm support. That's the wrong frame. Soft foam alone cushions impact but doesn't change how your foot is positioned; firm support alone corrects alignment but can feel harsh with no give. Heel pain usually needs both: cushioning at the point of impact, and structure that keeps the heel from rolling inward and tugging on the fascia.

How the Aetrex orthotic does both

The Posted Orthotic layers two materials for two jobs. The center is lQl50™ Memory Foam for cushioning, sitting over an Aerocell™ polyurethane base built for high energy return — the firm layer that keeps the structure from bottoming out. A posted heel controls over-pronation at heel strike, and a CopperGuard® antimicrobial top cover manages odor.

The L2320 is designed for low-to-flat arches with no forefoot pain — so the correction focuses on the heel, where the pain is, rather than forcing arch change you may not need. Jane G.: "Arch support, posted heel and nice cushioning foam keeps my feet in good alignment and comfortable." Aetrex's designs are informed by data from over 50 million foot scans.

What owners report

Greg, who'd paid $650 for custom orthotics: "These inserts are more comfortable than the custom orthotics for which I paid $650, and they work just as well." Steven H., after years of daily wear: "Allows me to stay on my feet longer without ankle pain."

One honest note: at 0.25 inches the orthotic adds volume — shoes with shallow heel cups may feel tighter at first, and the posted heel can take a few days to feel natural if you've worn flat insoles. Remove the factory insole before inserting.

Memory foam vs. orthotic support: FAQs

Is memory foam or firm support better for heel pain? Both, together. A firm posted heel controls pronation at heel strike; memory foam cushions the impact. The Aetrex Premium Memory Foam Posted Orthotic combines them.

Will a firm orthotic force arch correction I don't need? The L2320 is designed for low-to-flat arches and focuses its posted correction at the heel — a good fit when heel pressure, not arch collapse, is your main concern.

Will it fit my shoes? At 0.25 inches, it's designed for everyday shoes. Remove the factory insole first.

What a clinician says

“I’m a big fan of these orthotics because they use memory foam to promote comfort around the foot. Memory foam can spread out when you put your weight on it, which may give support to the entire foot during each step rather than just one specific area. This may allow your bodyweight to be more evenly distributed and can reduce localized pressure in common places like the the arch or heel. Studies looking at the effect of using memory foam insoles have found improvements in comfort and pressure distribution. Using these orthotics from Aetrex, I believe many patients may notice their feet and body feel more comfortable as they move.”
